IT IS TOUGH!
Losing weight is one of the biggest challenges anyone will ever undertake in their life. You need huge amounts of motivation and determination to lose weight and more importantly, keep it off. The media make out it's all so easy but it's really not. Getting to your ideal goal can take years and keeping the motivation up through tough times can be extremely difficult. This is why I have failed at losing weight in the past so many times.
I have been trying to lose weight since I was about 12 so that's 7 years. It has taken me 7 years to gain the motivation and sheer determination needed to successfully lose weight. A lot of losing weight is gaining the motivation needed and unless you have that there, you have no goal to reach and are really not interested enough to lose weight. There has to be a goal that you are aiming for otherwise why are you trying to lose it?
I have lost 6 stone in 6 months, which may sound good but I could have done it in a shorter time had I not encountered any of the mishaps along the way. The biggest thing for me when losing weight was the pressure I put myself under to succeed. After 4 months of constant worrying, am I eating right, I should go to the gym, am I doing enough, it does really get to you and makes you want to just curl up and tell everyone and everything to go away. Yes it's good to be under pressure as it makes you perform well however being under that huge pressure can make you feel trapped and want to run as far away from it as possible. I know I did.
I gave up completely for 3 months during my weight loss journey, I ran out of motivation and just couldn't take the pressure anymore. It was all too much. However after a while everything settled down and I was ready to face it again.
It's very easy for me to make out that losing weight was easy, but that's because I've done it now, I've got the results and so everything that I went through to get here doesn't matter anymore. It's almost like women and pregnancy, the amount of pain and suffering women go through during that 9 months, but in the end it doesn't matter because you have a baby and it's the best thing in the world, so you tend to forget how hard it is. Now when people ask me how to lose weight, I find myself saying "oh yes it was easy, just do lots of exercise" but that's not true or helpful. Losing weight is extremely challenging and tough, and anyone who has managed to lose weight should in my mind deserve a medal.
You have to constantly watch what you eat, are constantly thinking about how well or not so well you are doing, it drove me insane. And the worst part is once you drop the weight you become even more obsessed with your body because now (well for me anyway) I want my body to be perfect. Although I've lost the weight, I do not have a muscular, defined looking body so now I've got to exercise even more and train harder to get the results I want. You'd think I would be happy with dropping the 6 stone and getting to my ideal weight, but no, now I want to look like the man on the cover of Men's Health magazine.
It's almost like it's never ending but in some ways looking after your body and being healthy is never ending. To "fit in" to this society of beach babes and glistening 6 packs you have to watch what you eat and look the best you can. Maybe it's me just constantly feeling like challenging myself but it makes you question...will I ever be happy with it?
Well at least I know that I now have a healthy body, I've lowered my risks of heart disease and all the other medical side effects of obesity. It's just the aesthetic effects of being bigger and losing weight that are a pain in the ***.
I think unless you know that you are absolutely ready to lose weight and you think you have the determination and motivation to succeed, then you should wait. All you will do if you try to lose weight without this is cause unnecessary stress and pressure that no one needs in their life. Just make sure you have this and you will be fine.
My name is Ben and I have recently lost 6 stone in weight in just 6 months. I've started up a site to share my experience and help others do the same.
